: Garrett is home! 💛

Garrett first came to us as Mr. Bunny after being found by a kind person who hoped to give him a wonderful life. When her circumstances unexpectedly changed, she made the difficult and loving decision to reach out for help so he could continue receiving the care he deserved.

After a short stay in a temporary foster home, Mr. Bunny moved in with someone who was brand-new to rabbits. She had considered adopting someday, but wanted to foster first so she could learn the routines, understand their needs, and decide whether bunny life was truly right for her.

She thought Mr. Bunny would be the first of many foster buns.

She also thought her fiancé might need a little convincing.

Mr. Bunny apparently saw both of those thoughts as a challenge.

We helped with supplies, taught her the basics, checked in along the way, and welcomed her into our foster community. Within a few weeks, Mr. Bunny had completely won over his foster mom and the fiancé who was supposedly going to need convincing.

Soon, they asked if he could stay.

Fostering is not meant to be a trial adoption. That is what our two-week sleepover period is for. But sometimes, a foster bun finds the home that was meant to be theirs. We may lose a foster home, but that bunny gains a forever family.

Now named Garrett, he has become a full-time Velcro bunny who follows his mom whenever she is home. His goofiest moments usually happen too quickly for the camera, including one attempted couch jump that ended with him hanging on for dear life for ten whole seconds.

Hi, Lazarus here. I have been asked to explain something important about the bunnies at Houston Rabbit Resource. 🐰

Sometimes people see one of our foster bunnies and kindly offer to “take them in.” We know that usually comes from a place of wanting to help, and we are always grateful when someone cares about a bunny who needs a home.

But our bunnies cannot simply be picked up or handed over without going through our foster or adoption process.

When a bunny comes into our care, HRR makes a promise to them. A promise that their next home will be safe, that their needs will be understood, and that the people caring for them will be prepared for everything that comes with loving a rabbit.

Someone may have experience with animals, plenty of space, or feel certain they can help. They may even be able to provide a wonderful home. But HRR still needs an application, a conversation, and the chance to learn more about where that bunny would be living.

That process is not there to make things difficult. It is there because the humans at HRR take our lives very seriously.

Many of us have already experienced abandonment, neglect, outdoor living, poor housing, or uncertainty. It would not make sense to rescue us from one unknown situation and then send us into another one without asking questions first.

Rabbits are house pets. We need safe indoor housing, proper food, veterinary care, enrichment, and people who understand that we are not always cuddly animals who enjoy being picked up. We each have our own personalities, needs, and preferences too.

Houston Rabbit Resource is an established nonprofit rescue. They work with trusted shelters, veterinary partners, foster families, adopters, and community members to improve the lives of rabbits through rescue, education, medical care, spay and neuter assistance, vaccine clinics, grooming, boarding, supplies, and support.

They are not trying to find just anywhere for a bunny to go.

They are trying to find the right place.

So please do not be offended when the humans send you an application. Filling it out is the first step toward showing them that you take our lives just as seriously as they do.

And as a bunny who once needed someone to take his life seriously, I think that is a pretty important promise to keep. 💛
