I stood motionless as a statue, holding my breath and listening to the crunch of tires on the asphalt fading away, until the loud hum of the engine sank completely into nothingness.

Only silence remained. A thick, frigid silence that paradoxically brought me an overwhelming sense of absolute freedom.

I began to move. Limping, heavy, yet unyieldingly resolute.
Click. The front door deadbolt.
Click. The side door latch.
Click. Turning the lock on the back door twice.
Layer by layer, I personally sealed off every exit, turning this luxurious mansion—which had been the graveyard of my youth—into an impenetrable fortress. Right here, right now, this was my command center.

Finished, I walked straight into Ethan’s home office. The scent of his expensive men's cologne still lingered in the air—a scent that once captivated me, but now only provoked sheer revulsion. Lying dormant beneath his massive oak desk was a masterfully camouflaged wooden panel. He had always been so certain that with my heavy belly and my "submissive" nature, I would never in my life bend down low enough to touch his filthy secrets.

But he was wrong.

I pressed hard into the hidden joint. A dry snap echoed. The secret drawer slid out, laying bare the entire tarnished truth he had buried for years.

I yanked it open, dumping everything onto the polished wooden desk.
It all sat there, glaring at me like a battlefield of lies.

Mountains of predatory loan records.
Disastrous internal financial reports, riddled with holes covered up by phantom numbers.
And staring right back at me, the most ruthless of all... were powers of attorney and mortgage contracts bearing signatures forged with astonishing precision. He had copied my signature. He had taken advantage of the times I was writhing in agony from morning sickness to secretly slip through paperwork, gutting my entire trust fund and the massive inheritance my grandfather had left me.

Massive streams of money, the blood and sweat of my family line, had been smoothly siphoned by my wretched husband to salvage his dying, bankrupt luxury car company. He didn't just betray my love; he wanted to bleed my child and me dry to feed his greed and delusional vanity.

Evidence. It was all right here, under my hands. Black and white, as razor-sharp as a guillotine raised to its absolute peak.

Bzzzt.
The screen of the phone in my hand suddenly flashed, tearing through the gloomy atmosphere. A new text from Diane:

"Don't cause any trouble or call whining while we're away. Learn how to be a mother."

I stared blankly at that insolent, arrogant message, reading it twice. And then, a bitter laugh burst from my throat. The laughter echoed through the empty room, blending with the freezing tears rolling down my cheeks.

At that exact moment, a colossal contraction hit.
Agony. Suffocating. So violent it felt like my body was being ripped apart.
I collapsed, my hands gripping the edge of the wooden desk so tightly my knuckles turned bone-white. The baby in my womb kicked harder than ever before. That tiny life was like a warrior, urging her mother to stand up and fight this final battle.

This time, I wasn't laughing at the pathetic nature of those two fools. I laughed because I knew better than anyone that the idiots currently settling into their first-class seats to Cancún had absolutely no idea... what kind of hell's gates were waiting for them.

Ignoring the flesh-tearing pain, I took a deep breath, swallowing the last shred of my weakness. I decisively tapped the number pinned at the top of my contacts.

"Marianne," I spoke, my voice dead, razor-sharp, and terrifyingly calm the second the attorney answered.

"Nora? I heard you're about to give birth. Are you at the hospital yet?" Marianne's voice rang out, full of concern.

"Not yet. But they're on the plane," I replied, my eyes sharp as scalpels scanning the forged documents.

A brief but heavy silence enveloped the other end of the line. When Marianne spoke again, her tone had switched to that of a true executioner: "Are you absolutely sure?"

"Do it, Marianne," I gritted out word by word, feeling a rush of warm fluid start to run down my legs. My water just broke. The countdown had begun. "Freeze all accounts. Send the original files to the FBI and the IRS. Send the forgery evidence directly to the financial crimes division. When they land on the beaches of Cancún, I want their credit cards declined, and when they panic and fly back, I want a federal arrest warrant waiting for them right at customs."

"Understood. Everything will detonate within the next twenty-four hours," Marianne replied crisply. "Now, call 911 immediately. Go have your baby, Nora. Leave the trash to me."

"Thank you."

I hung up. A long beep echoed in isolation.
I slowly dialed 911, calling an ambulance for myself.

Standing up straight amidst a room overflowing with criminal evidence, I caressed my pregnant belly one last time before my daughter entered the world. The labor pains were no longer a torture, but the triumphant drumbeat of a resurrection.

Tomorrow, a new life would cry her first cry. And tomorrow, Ethan and Diane's throne of lies would collapse, turning into ash.

The submissive, weak woman named Nora had died in this house. Walking out of here, stepping into the wailing ambulance racing toward me, there was only a mother left. A mother who would never bow her head again.

That night, the rain poured down in torrents. The roaring thunder drowned out the relentless crying of the two newborn babies. In a dilapidated and gloomy rented room, Ha Lan—a girl who had just turned twenty—buried her face in her hands and sobbed. Standing before her was Phong, her lover, possessing a dashing exterior but cold, heartless eyes.

"It's either me, or these unacknowledged children," Phong hissed, his voice steady but carrying the weight of a thousand pounds. "We cannot change our lives if we carry this burden, Lan. Make your choice."

Youthful impulsiveness, blind love, and Phong's masterful psychological manipulation pushed Ha Lan to make the most cruel decision of a lifetime. That night, she wrapped the two infants in thin blankets and placed them in two bamboo baskets before the gates of a remote convent. The only keepsake she left behind was a silver pendant engraved with the letter "Lan," broken in half and hastily tucked into their swaddles. Ha Lan stepped into the waiting car, her tears mixing with the rain, absolutely never daring to look back.

Twenty years passed in the blink of an eye.

Ha Lan and Phong now reigned at the pinnacle of high society. They owned a massive real estate empire, living in a luxurious mansion bathed in regal golden light. However, behind that perfect facade, Ha Lan's life was a series of hollow days. Their marriage was nothing but a cold grave. Phong gradually revealed his true nature as a narcissist, constantly having affairs, controlling his wife, and secretly embezzling company funds.

As for Ha Lan, she was tormented by insomnia. Whenever she closed her eyes, she saw the torrential rain of the past and heard the heart-wrenching cries of the abandoned children.

It was in Ha Lan's loneliest moment that Nguyet appeared. The young woman, with her tactful demeanor and sincere eyes, quickly surpassed many candidates to become Ha Lan's most trusted personal assistant. With strange attentiveness and empathy, Nguyet gradually stepped into her boss's closed-off inner world. Unconsciously, Ha Lan began to treat Nguyet like a real daughter, desperate to fill the hidden remorse deep in her heart.

Meanwhile, in the business world, Phong was drawn to a promising young investor named Minh. In contrast to his calm, cold exterior, Minh threw out massive, lucrative "baits," enough to awaken Phong's bottomless greed. Step by step, Minh lured the former lover into illegal transactions, embezzling assets from the very corporation Ha Lan controlled.

What neither Phong nor Ha Lan knew was this: Minh and Nguyet were the twins from that stormy night. Growing up in an orphanage, tasting all the bitterness of life, they had relied on the two halves of the pendant and extraordinary efforts to trace their origins. But they did not return to reunite with their mother. They returned to strip away exactly what that woman had traded her own flesh and blood to obtain: Phong's love and the colossal fortune.

The final velvet curtain had to fall.

Under Nguyet's sophisticated arrangement, Ha Lan opened the door to a hotel room herself, witnessing with her own eyes the husband she had worshipped for 20 years making love to a young mistress. More painfully, she heard Phong's vicious plot with her own ears: He was finalizing paperwork to siphon off all their assets and preparing to throw her into a psychiatric hospital.

The illusion of love she held for two decades shattered into pieces. Ha Lan completely collapsed. With staggering steps, she returned to the suffocating mansion, seeking out Nguyet—her only remaining emotional support.

But in the cold living room, Nguyet was not standing there alone. Minh was there too.

The silence was suffocating. Minh stepped forward and slowly placed the two tarnished halves of the silver pendant on the marble table.

Ha Lan's eyes froze. Every feature on her face contorted in utter panic. The past rushed back, sharp and realistic down to the smallest detail. She looked up at Minh and Nguyet—the two people who had just helped her expose her treacherous husband's true face, now standing before her, bearing the forms of the two tiny lives she had abandoned under the convent's porch.

"Why...?" Ha Lan collapsed, tears streaming down her face, her voice broken. She fell to her knees, begging for forgiveness, promising to use everything she had to make amends.

But Minh only looked at her coldly, while Nguyet's eyes held a mixture of pity and bitterness. "We don't need your money," Minh said, his voice razor-sharp. "And you have nothing left to give anyway."

The entire dossier of Phong's illegal transactions had already been sent by Minh to the investigative agency. The real estate empire collapsed overnight. Phong was urgently arrested, facing a sentence of decades in prison. Ha Lan suddenly lost everything. She lost the blind love she had once considered her reason for living, lost her glamorous fortune, and most cruelly—she forever lost the chance to be forgiven by her children.

The next morning, as the media storm began to gather, Minh and Nguyet walked out the gates of the mansion. The brilliant morning sunlight shone on their faces. They did not smile, but the burden of hatred from the past twenty years had been cast off, opening the door to a truly free life.

Left behind, in the empty, cold living room, Ha Lan sat hugging her knees on the floor. Pale light filtered through the window, casting over her haggard, lifeless face. All that surrounded her now were the ashes of her false illusions, and a life sentence without iron bars: The endless torment of her own conscience.
