Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating intestinal disease that primarily affects premature and medically fragile infants. It causes severe inflammation and tissue damage in a baby’s gut and remains one of the leading causes of death for premature babies.

While some babies survive NEC, many face lifelong nutritional and neurological complications.

One of the most important things we know: human milk helps protect vulnerable infants.

➡️ Mother’s own milk provides the most protection against NEC
➡️ When mother’s milk isn’t available, pasteurized donor human milk is the next best option
➡️ Continued research, education, and advocacy are urgently needed to help prevent NEC and support affected families
