Giant 16th-Century ‘Colossus’ Sculpture in Florence, Italy Has Entire Rooms Hidden Inside.
This epic colossus, part man and part mountain, was created in the late 1500s by the renowned Italian sculptor Giambologna as a symbol of Italy’s rugged Apennine mountains. Named Appennino, this mountain god stands 35 feet tall on the grounds of the Villa di Pratolino in Tuscany.
The rugged statue conceals a fascinating secret – its interior holds several rooms with different functions that brought this colossus to life. The monster in his left hand spewed water from an underground stream, and it’s rumored that his head contained a fireplace which, when lit, would blow smoke out of his nostrils.
