I always find it funny when people say you shouldn’t use too many spices in your daily cooking… but then turn around and tell everyone to take a spoonful of raw turmeric, ginger, or garlic every morning. 😂
These ingredients were never meant to be consumed like medicine by the spoonful. Our ancestors understood that herbs and spices were meant to be incorporated into everyday meals, where they could bloom in healthy fats and release their flavors and beneficial compounds naturally.
Food has always been the original wellness routine. Instead of chasing the next health trend, maybe it’s time to get back to cooking the way generations before us did—with real ingredients, nourishing meals, and plenty of herbs and spices. 🌿✨
At Merkus Kitchen, we believe real food, thoughtfully prepared with quality ingredients, is one of the best forms of self-care. No gimmicks. No extremes. Just wholesome meals made with intention.
✨ Your kitchen can be your wellness routine.

JULY 1 – KETI KOTI
Abolishment of slavery in Suriname 🇸🇷
Honoring Freedom. Remembering History. Celebrating Heritage.
On July 1, 1863, slavery was officially abolished in Suriname. This historic day, known as Keti Koti—meaning “Broken Chains”—marks the beginning of freedom for thousands of enslaved people and stands as a powerful reminder of resilience, strength, and hope.
Today, we honor the courage and sacrifices of those who came before us. We celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of Surinamese people while recognizing the importance of preserving our history for future generations.
We Remember.
We Honor.
We Celebrate.
We Move Forward Together.
“Our history is our strength. Our freedom is our legacy.”
Happy Keti Koti!
