Navigating AI with Faith
"ChatGPT is set to replace your profession!"
Such foreboding predictions have echoed continuously for the past eight months since OpenAI introduced its Chatbot, and they apply to virtually all job sectors.
Be it financial analysts, educators, medical practitioners, or tech professionals, ChatGPT has raised a sense of anxiety for all. Even a divine intervention couldn't protect your job from AI's grasp, as evidenced when a couple in Colorado chose the chatbot to preside over their wedding ceremony.
Despite the looming predictions, it can be challenging to grasp the gravity of the threat posed by ChatGPT. Indeed, by a certain estimation, AI was the cause for almost 4,000 job losses in May. However, such abstract statistics might not feel substantial.
Emily Hanley, on the other hand, embodies a tangible example of AI-induced job loss, as she was displaced from her profession by ChatGPT.
Being a writer and stand-up comedian, Emily had a thriving career as a freelance copywriter until her work started getting outsourced to ChatGPT, and her job opportunities started dwindling.
Emily chronicled this journey, which included a three-month ordeal to find an alternative profession. At present, she's handing out samples of sparkling water at grocery stores to pay her bills as she continues her job hunt.
She shares a poignant lesson she's learned from this experience: "If a robot can efficiently perform your job for less, it's inevitable that it will."
It might seem that Emily's displacement was a predictable consequence of AI advancement, given that copywriting lies directly in a chatbot's proficiency zone. Hence, it was just a matter of time before such roles were supplanted.
You might be lulled into thinking, "AI won't be able to take over my job."
However, as investments in AI continue to surge, it's clear that its capabilities will extend beyond merely seizing copywriting jobs.
The rumor mill is abuzz with Apple's entry into chatbot technology, reinforcing the notion that this isn't just a fleeting trend. One of the globe's largest consultancies is wagering heavily on AI's potential to revolutionize employment.
As part of a collaboration focused on generative AI tools, KPMG is investing $2 billion with Microsoft.
"The traditional methodologies of conducting business and service ex*****on will likely become obsolete," opines Carl Carande, the US Vice Chair and Global Head of KPMG Advisory.
Even if AI hasn't figured out how to take over your profession yet, that doesn't mean it can't. The fundamental premise of generative AI is its ceaseless learning from users. Whether it's indeed enhancing its skills remains a contentious issue, as indicated by a recent study.
Consider Emily's job hunting endeavor, for instance. She sought a role that ironically involved teaching an AI to be a more proficient copywriter. One could say it was adding insult to injury.
