One cognitively intentional way of overcoming depression is to begin to accept yourself. There are a variety of milestones in doing such work, but a good place to start is to release yourself from expectations that you may have adopted from others that might actually be unrealistic. Several things can make expectations unrealistic, but common factors are time, resources, and desires. One great advantage of having a relationship with the Holy Spirit is that you don’t have to play a guessing game as to what expectations might be dragging you down. The Holy Spirit is a light that can expose beliefs that don’t belong in your inner world. Ask Holy Spirit to show you what expectations need to go, forgive the person for putting it there, and then forgive yourself for trying to chase something unrealistic.
