The view from the office isn't too bad today

04/21/2025

As you begin preparing your planting beds this springs you may be wondering what is this white stuff? Is it bad?

It is most likely Mycorrhizal Fungi. This amazing fungi team up with plant roots to boost growth, improve water & nutrient uptake, increase disease resistance, and enhance soil health. Think of them as nature’s underground support system!

🔹 Stronger roots
🔹 Healthier soil
🔹 Happier plants

There are two main types:
- Ectomycorrhizal – work with woody plants
- Endomycorrhizal (AMF) – most common, found in many garden plants

Better roots = better plants. Let nature do the heavy lifting!

When to Plant Bulbs for Year-Round Color

Looking to wake up your garden with vibrant spring and summer blooms? Planting bulbs is one of the easiest ways to bring bursts of color to your landscape—season after season!

Here’s what to know

Two Main Types of Bulbs:
Spring-Flowering Bulbs
- Bloom: Early spring to early summer
- Examples: Tulips, crocuses, daffodils
- Plant in fall, a few weeks before your first frost.
- These need cold temps to spark those gorgeous spring blooms!

Summer-Flowering Bulbs
- Bloom: Early summer to early fall
- Examples: Gladiolus, dahlias, cannas
- Plant in spring, a few weeks after the last frost.
- These tender plants don’t like cold—wait for the soil to warm up!

***Bonus: Hardy perennials like daylilies can be planted in either spring or fall!

What Is a Bulb, Anyway?
Not all “bulbs” are true bulbs!
- True bulbs = Tulips, daffodils
- Corms = Gladiolus
- Rhizomes = Irises, daylilies
- Tubers = Dahlias
Most gardeners call them all “bulbs”—and we’re cool with that. 😄

Caring for Bulbs:
✔️ Wait until spring bulbs finish blooming and their foliage has fully died back before moving or dividing them.
✔️ Use popsicle sticks or markers to remember where bulbs are planted—makes fall digging way easier!
✔️ Divide and replant bulbs in late summer or early fall for continued success.

When to Plant Perennial Flowers

Looking to build a garden that comes back year after year? Perennials are your go-to! These long-lasting beauties may die back in winter, but they come roaring back in spring—stronger, fuller, and more vibrant.

Here’s what you need to know about when to plant perennial flowers:

Start Seeds in Spring

While some perennials are a little trickier to start from seed, many are totally doable—and budget-friendly!

Some take 3–4 weeks just to germinate, so start early and follow those seed packet instructions closely.

Plant Mature Perennials in Fall

Buying from a nursery? The best time to plant mature perennials is in fall—at least 6 weeks before your first frost (October 20th in Central Ohio).
Why? Cooler temps + winter moisture = stronger root development.

When to Start Seeds Indoors:
⏱️ 8–10 Week Growers
Start indoors and transplant after the last frost (April 27th):
- Anise hyssop, catmint, columbine, coreopsis, echinacea, gaillardia, monarda, thyme, yarrow
- Rudbeckia & violas: Hardier—plant 1–2 weeks before the last frost
- Perennial hibiscus: Tender—wait 1–2 weeks after the last frost

⏱️ 10–12 Week Growers
Start early to give these time to thrive:
- Daisies, delphinium, dianthus – Can be planted 1–2 weeks before last frost
- Asclepias, foxglove, heliopsis, phlox – Need to wait until after the last frost

*** Pro Tip: Even if perennials don’t bloom in their first year, they’re busy establishing roots for bigger and better displays next season!

When to Plant Annual Flowers

Let’s talk annuals—the one-season wonders that bring nonstop color to your garden!

Annual flowers sprout, bloom, and go to seed all in one season—then call it quits when winter hits. The good news? They’re usually super easy to grow from seed!

Timing is key! Most annuals are frost-tender, so wait until after the last frost (April 27th here in Central Ohio) before planting outdoors.

Here’s a quick guide to help you get growing:

⏱️ 3–6 Week Growers
These fast bloomers grow quickly and can often be direct sown after frost or started indoors:
• Morning glories, sunflowers, zinnias

⏱️ 6–8 Week Growers
Start these 6–8 weeks before planting out (after frost):
- Marigolds, cosmos, celosia, bachelor buttons, salvia, strawflowers, and more!
- Alyssum, calendula, and delphiniums are a little frost-tolerant—plant them 1–2 weeks before the last frost.

⏱️ 8–10 Week Growers
These slower starters need a longer head start:
- Petunias, phlox, snapdragons, stock, verbena
- Coleus and impatiens love warmth—wait a week or two after the last frost to plant them.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to harden off your seedlings before transplanting them outdoors!

A lot of people ask us, "When should I plant flowers?"

Timing is everything when it comes to planting flowers! Whether you’re dreaming of vibrant annuals, long-lasting perennials, or spring-blooming bulbs, knowing when to plant is just as important as what to plant.

Here’s what to consider:
✅ Is it frost-sensitive?
✅ Are you starting from seed or transplanting?
✅ Are you planting too early—or too late?

Just like veggies, flowers have their own perfect planting window. Start too early and you risk leggy, weak plants. Too late, and they may not bloom at all!

Pro Tip: Always know your local frost dates!
Here in Central Ohio, our average last spring frost is April 27th and first fall frost is October 20th. Mark those on your calendar!

Follow our page for detailed planting guides on annuals, perennials, and bulbs over the next few days!
