Preparing for a hurricane requires three main steps: securing your home, packing a go-bag, and creating a family communication plan. Stockpile a 7-to-14 day supply of non-perishable food, and set aside one gallon of water per person per day. Ensure your gas tank is full, and safeguard critical documents in waterproof containers.
Pre-Season Planning
Know your evacuation zone: Find out if you live in an evacuation zone through your local government's emergency management office or via Ready.gov.
Review your insurance: Homeowners and renters insurance policies do not cover flooding; check with your provider or the National Flood Insurance Program.
Document belongings: Take photos or videos of your home's interior and exterior to make potential insurance claims easier to process.
Building an Emergency Kit
Gather the following items in watertight containers or grab-and-go bags:
Water & Food: At least a 3-to-5 day supply of water and non-perishable food, plus a manual can opener.
Electronics: Flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-powered or hand-crank NOAA Weather Radio, and power banks for your cell phones.
Medical: A fully stocked first-aid kit and a 7-day supply of personal medications.
Finances: Extra cash in small bills, as ATMs will not work if the power goes out.
Securing Your Property
Yard cleanup: Bring all outdoor furniture, grills, propane tanks, and loose debris inside or anchor them, as high winds could turn them into projectiles.
Windows & doors: Install permanent storm shutters or pre-cut plywood to cover all windows and glass doors.
Gutters: Clean out drains and downspouts to minimize localized flooding.
