Face up, ass down. No, it’s not the K**a Sutra. It’s part of Pontiac’s design philosophy for cars in the late ’60s into the ’70s.
John DeLorean favored sleek lines with a European flair that included a spoiler-less Firebird trunk lid.
Engineering played a role in the decision to keep the rear end low on these cars. The F-Body platform was one of the first in the GM lineup to see wind tunnel testing. It became clear that the overall body attitude helped optimize airflow over the windshield and reduce drag. By dropping the rear, Pontiac improved aerodynamic efficiency.
This is most evident in 1969, where the rear axle included dents on the axle tubes to gain travel clearance from the lowered stance.
While the Day 2 style of a forward rake was prevalent in the aftermarket, many Pontiac performance cars from this era should actually have a slight reverse rake (nose up, tail down).
Factory reverse rake or the popular Day 2 forward stance, which do you run on your classic?
