Tom Fitzsimmons and Jerry Cirino started today’s ON THE TOWN like two brothers reuniting after a dozen years of separation. The two fondly explaining why Cirino’s has been a family favorite for dining excellence, attention to every detail, all while maintaining its down-home friendly atmosphere. Cirino’s enjoys preparing and the service of its fine foods, wine, and cocktails to the families of Nevada County. Reservations not required, however recommended, 530-477-6000.
Today’s NCLFC ON THE TOWN guests were annual favorites. Paul Cummings, Nevada County Office of Emergency Services along with Allen Schafer, a twenty-plus year veteran of orchestrating the Counties Safety/Health and Fire Protection Carnival. Paul and Allen have worked together for years ensuring an extraordinarily successful event. There will be no shortage of games, BBQ, snacks, entertainment, and important exhibits. This year’s Carnival is Saturday, May 4th 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
As always, for kids. Oh! and parents too...

Wonderful program today. Consolidated Fire Chief Patrick Sullivan was introduced by NCLFC Associate Board member, Tom Vallee. Incidentally, Tom is a retired Fire Chief of the Ross Valley fire district. Our KNCO ON THE TOWN, M.C. and “master of the Mic,” Tom Fitzsimmons shares the same professional enthusiasm displayed by Chiefs Sullivan and Vallee for their admiration for our county’s firefighting personnel. Chief Sullivan also stated his department’s morale and sense of duty excellence remains extremely high. Due in some part to Chief Jason Robitaille and new procedures in place. A wonderful place to work as a team. The chief went on to announce his appreciation to the Nevada County Law Enforcement and Fire Protection Council for its financial assistance in the construction of the new helipad at station 84.
NCLFC’s largest fund raiser, the Red-Light Ball, is April 13th and approaching rapidly. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. To date Our Red and Blue light sponsors include:
ZION CAPITAL, BUDGET BLINDS OF GRASS VALLEY, TRIPPS AUTO BODY AND PAINT, BRIAN HOLLISTER STATE FARM INSURANCE, OWENS ESTATE AND WEALTH MANAGEMENT, TRISH MORELAND REAL ESTATE, MIKE BRATTON STATE FARM INSURANCE, THE MIKE AND EVELYN WALSH FOUNDATION, and GRASS VALLEY PROVISIONS. We all appreciate and thank our generous sponsors and friends.
Ryan Cirino filled in for Jerry and announced the winner of Cirino’s “Kiss the Cook Contest,” Brian from Reno, will enjoy dinner for two next time he is in Grass Valley. Congratulation Brian.
BTW, enjoyed Cirino’s Calamari appetizer today at lunch. Try it, sensational! But first call for reservations, 530-477-6000
Once again, We appreciate the generously of our sponsors, Cirino’s at Main Street, KNCO’s fine staff, and of course our guests for their time, expertise, and participation.

KNCO’s and NCLFC’s final 2023 ON THE TOWN broadcast was a fitting tribute to Jerry Cirino, KNCO’s radio host Tom Fitzsimmons, and well known, lifelong Nevada County citizen Charlie Jakobs. Three beloved Nevada County institutions respected for their honesty, integrity, and hard work, all for the betterment of Nevada County. Host Tom Fitzsimmons took pride in introducing Charlie. The pair go “way back” into KNCO history, and it is clear they enjoy each other’s company. Many stories could have been reminisced, however both gents stayed on topic. Fire safety in the home, use caution with the burning of candles, coupled with an introduction of a home ‘fire suppression blanket.”
Jerry Cirino spoke, with appreciation, about his customers, family, and staff. Important to note, Cirino’s is still hiring for all positions. For that valuable job interview and/or the sought-after dining reservation 530-477-6000. Bon Appetit!
As 2023 is winding down, it is time to extend our sincere gratitude to... Cirino’s for the generous hours of sponsorship allowing the Nevada County Law Enforcement and Fire Protection Council to be a part of KNCO’s ON THE TOWN program each week. (Not only for 2023 but the previous eight plus years!) Also, we need to mention Nevada County Broadcasters, radio station KNCO and especially Tom Fitzsimmons for his years of radio professionalism. “He sure makes everything look easy...” All our sensational NCLFC 2023 guests, especially this week’s guest, Charlie Jakobs. Charlie sets a high bar for radio enthusiasm; he also gives the listeners excellent fire safety advice along with Nevada County history in a manner enjoyed by all.
Here is the best 2024 has to offer us all. Most importantly, Thank you.

Nevada County Law Enforcement and Fire Protection Council President Lorraine Jewett hosted this week’s radio program with guests Jason Robitaille and Don Hoffler. Jason is chief of the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District and Don is co-owner of Robinson Enterprise Inc.
NCC Fire is installing a landing zone for helicopters behind Station 84 in Nevada City, and Robinson Enterprise is doing the dirt and aggregate work. The landing zone will reduce response times during emergencies that require hoist and helicopter maneuvers, such as rescues from the steep Yuba River Canyon.
The pad is now fully functional and will be improved with a paved road as money allows. The initial work was funded by a $15,000 grant from the NCLFC. Kudos to Robinson Enterprise for doing the work at a greatly reduced rate, in part because Don understands the importance of this life-saving project: he is a former fire chief!
The KNCO radio show was once again hosted by and at Cirino’s at Main Street. Ryan Cirino emphasized the importance of making reservations during the holiday season for those who want to enjoy any of the 70 delicious menu items.
To date, the NCLFC has donated more than $1.1 million in equipment and training to local first responders. The nonprofit’s next fundraiser is the Red Light Ball on April 13 at the Nevada City Elks Lodge. Tickets will be available after the first of the year at www.NCLawAndFire.org. For sponsorship opportunities of this social event of the season, contact any NCLFC Board member or leave a message on the NCLFC website. You may also telephone 916-800-2363 and leave a message for Treasurer Buckley Armacher.
