We honor and celebrate Lunar New Year with the East Asian community diaspora. This tradition originating from China and deeply embedded in the cultures of Korea, Vietnam and surrounding regions, is celebrated widely across Southeast Asia and globally.
In our nonprofit’s quest to connect and correlate the intersection of arts and public health, we will be sharing valuable insights.
We recognize and strive to illuminate challenges the Asian communities face regarding mental health.
Let’s look at this issue from our ♥️ (empathy), 🧠 (awareness), 💭 (questions/thoughts), and 🤲🏽 (what can we do) to better understand and help our community members.
♥️: Mental health is often an uncomfortable topic in the AAPI community, historically linked to weakness or shame, which prevents many from seeking help. A meaningful contrast exists: younger generations are more open to discussing mental health and seeking support, while older generations often believe emotional struggles should remain private. This silence allows suffering to continue.
🧠: Generational ‘tough love’ leads many older adults to suppress feelings, fearing vulnerability is weakness. This pain and pattern of unspoken trauma can repeat in their own families.
💭: We wonder if older adults resent younger generations’ access to support they lacked, and if cultural pressure to present strength and success maintains the silence.
🤲🏽: Addressing mental health stigma is challenging, but necessary for healing across all communities. Change begins with individuals courageously seeking treatment or speaking openly. Progress requires collective efforts to create safe spaces, including adding culturally aware mental health programs in schools and community care to normalize these discussions.
