COACH'S CORNER: March 7 - Defining Consistency 03/21/2021

This article is a timely "read" with the recent cancellation of Ironman Texas and with all the uncertainty of Ironman Canada, in particular, for a number of our athletes. Matt Dixon talks about consistency being the key to our long term success and I think he does a good job of giving us tools to manage the stress a pandemic brings to our training and racing lives. I'd love your thoughts.

COACH'S CORNER: March 7 - Defining Consistency This week -- within the midst of the continued uncertainty around racing -- it feels right to address training within this environment, with a special emphasis on consistency. We all began 2021 w...

Stop Counting Your Running Mileage 12/21/2020

Merry Christmas Everyone! My athletes know that I almost always give run workouts by time versus distance. My reason is this way I know you have 2 hours of running "time" on your feet if that's what is prescribed. If I say 14k of running, and you go to trails, or have a very tired day, it might take you 2:15, or vise versa, you are very fresh, feel good, and knock it out a lot faster, the training load changes. Thus I use time. I also use time on the bike for the most part.

I always say "your body knows time, not distance". I believe this to be true.

This article talks about the downfall of mileage being your number one training metric to focus on. I really hope you take a minute to read it, and of course, share your thoughts.

Stop Counting Your Running Mileage It’s the one training metric virtually all runners track, but running scientists think we can do better

The Enduring Mystery of Muscle Cramps 09/21/2020

The ongoing cramp debate! This is a good article with a bit of humor at the end.

Bottom line... it's still a mystery, but this article is interesting all the same:)

The Enduring Mystery of Muscle Cramps A new study suggests that strength training is more important than electrolytes for preventing cramps

TriClubs 09/15/2020

The race director for Ironman Canada in Penticton just posted this on the IMC page. It's some info we've all been waiting for so I thought I'd share.

Hey friends,
Update for you. We are TENTATIVELY planning on opening registration to our priority groups (see below) on Monday the 21st of Sept...like in 1 week from this post. The following Monday, the 28th of Sept, we will open general registration.

Why "Tentative".....well....have you seen what 2020 has done to your best laid plans?...yeah, same here. So everything is tentative until its not. Thank you for understanding 🙂
Who is in our priority groups and how do you get in that listing? Allow me to share.

1) AWA athletes (means you need to be fast-ish)- if you are one you already know. If you are not one....you are not, and you cant become one this week

2) Tri-Club member - You need to be a member of an affiliated Tri-Club with IRONMAN - https://www.ironman.com/triclubs - once you find your club you need to designate your affiliation. Your club does not send us a list and we compile....YOU need to affiliate with the club. Don't miss that step. We pull that list middle of this week, so don't wait. do it now.

3) Previous year athletes at volunteers - So in this case 2019 IRONMAN Canada in Whistler and 2019 Whistler Volunteers. We also will be including 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 Canada athletes as this was a same day event in 2019

Now, you will be asking "what happens if we sell out during priority?" and that's a reasonable question. I cannot promise anything. This event originally (pre-Covid) sold out in hours.

Sooooo.....you need to be ready to click REGISTER on Sep 28th. Best bet is to join a club and get that done ASAP. Other than....well this should tell you all you need to know about Penticton. LEGENDARY. DONT WANT TO MISS IT. Its hard to get in because its amazing.
Ok, more updates coming along the way.

Oh, One last reminder - Just because we are opening registration and you have not received your deferral link and info yet, does not mean we missed you. Give us until end of Sept to process those. Your spot is secure, we are just processing them (see previous post from Sept 13th below on that)

That's it for me. Or at least that's it for what I suspect you care about right now.

We miss zip ties as much as you miss swim caps and timing straps. We CANNOT wait to get back to racing! See you in the Okanagan on August 29th! You will find me at the Barking Parrot most nights...just sayin
