California Family Council
📣 Lobby Day is your opportunity to make your voice heard at the California State Capitol.
Join California Family Council on August 4 as we meet directly with state legislators to advocate for life, family, and religious freedom.
Never done anything like this before? That’s okay! We’ll provide the training, talking points, and guidance you need every step of the way. You don’t need experience—just a willingness to show up.
Legislators need to hear from the people they represent. Make your voice count.

“One nation under God.” 🇺🇸 As we celebrate Independence Day, we are thankful for the freedoms we enjoy and the countless men and women who have defended them. May God continue to bless America, grant wisdom to our leaders, and remind us that true freedom is found in Him. Happy Fourth of July!
California already treats every faith equally: any student can be excused for any religious holiday, no exceptions needed. AB 2017 throws that out.
CFC’s Leandra Wells testified before the Senate committee today in opposition, warning that naming specific holidays in state law means Sacramento starts picking winners and losers among religions: “There are 4,000 [faiths] worldwide. The state cannot celebrate them all, so it will keep choosing winners and losers among religions. That is precisely what the Constitution forbids.”
Neutral law protects every family.
AB 2017: the bill that would put public schools in the business of celebrating the end of Ramadan
The bill writes two Islamic holidays, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, into California state law by name and authorizes the State Board of Education to adopt curriculum guides for school exercises acknowledging and celebrating them.
CFC Vice President Greg Burt testified against it before the Senate Governmental Organization Committee.
His point was simple. There’s a difference between excusing a child’s absence and commissioning the state to celebrate a religion’s holy days.
California law already lets any student be excused for any religious holiday at a parent’s request. That framework is neutral. It protects every faith equally and asks the state to play no favorites. AB 2017 throws that out.
And the author’s own rationale, that Eid deserves recognition because the legislature already named Diwali, has no stopping point. There are over 4,000 religions worldwide. The state cannot celebrate them all, so it ends up choosing winners and losers among faiths. That is precisely what the Constitution forbids.
Meanwhile, they’ll fund schools to celebrate Eid and Diwali, but never the birth or resurrection of Jesus.
AB 2017 passed committee 11 to 1. We’re watching.
