Fort Wayne | Ryan Ehrmann from RE Customs | Please tell me about your tallow products. “Tallow is beef fat. I buy it local from Walton. Once rendered down, it's high in vitamin A, D, E, & and fatty acids. It is great for so many things like skin care, hair car...all sorts of stuff. I have soap, beard conditioner, lotions, and things of like that.” How did you develop an interest in beef tallow? “So, while I was pregnant, I actually had to have a surgery, and then they found out that I had cancer. So, then I started looking into natural alternatives to literally everything, including lotions because I was looking for something to help with scarring. I found tallow is good for skin elasticity. It's good for rashes. I'm not a medical professional, and I can't give medical advice, but it's good for like eczema and psoriasis, and stuff like that.” Do you ever cook with beef tallow? “I do. I cook everything with it. I use it as an alternative to butter. I cook my chicken in it. Whenever I render it down, I usually get about 20 pounds of tallow and or of suet at a time. But I usually will get all of it rendered down, and then I fill my jar back up for my cooking. But I use it as a butter alternative or just a cooking oil in general. I like solid. Solid at room temperature is my go to.” [I interviewed Ryan at the Greentown Glass Festival.]
