Roman Theater of Merida
Spain ❤️

The Roman Theatre of Mérida is a true marvel. It was built around 16-15 BC by Agrippa, a close friend and son-in-law of Emperor Augustus, and could originally seat about 6,000 spectators.

It was designed for classical plays and public spectacles, reflecting the importance of Roman culture in the ancient city of Augusta Emerita.

Over the centuries, it fell into disuse and was buried, but it was rediscovered and excavated starting in the early 20th century.

What's truly special is that it's still an active venue today, most famously hosting the International Classical Theatre Festival of Mérida every summer.

It's incredible to think of performances taking place in a setting that's over 2,000 years old!
