Soapbox derby racing is a tradition that dates back to the 1930s in Flint. On May 30, racers returned to a familiar location: the renovated Cronin Derby Downs, now Michigan's only permanent soapbox racing track.
“The way that I really like to frame it is if you think about what the area, the state, the nation, the world looks like 10, 15, 30 years from now, there’s gonna be a need for significant leaders to make some significant changes and to do some really big things. And one, how awesome would it be for that person to be from the city of Flint or from our area?" - Kevin Cronin of Flint Racing and STEM

“The percentage that go on to play college or pro is very small, but what you can learn through playing a sport will serve you well in your life. Confidence, team-building, cooperation, collaboration, all of those things. You don’t just wake up one day with them as a young kid. We want to help kids gain confidence. You never know what type of impact you’ll have on somebody. You could say a kind word or give them encouragement, and that could change their whole perspective and their growth as a person." - Flint native Carrie Taylor
Learn how Taylor teamed up with Flint Style Soccer, Flint City AFC, the UM-Flint Women's Soccer club, and others from Flint's women's soccer community to teach the game to younger generations.

"What's made the Flint music scene really special is anybody could do it, and everyone was encouraged to, there weren’t gatekeepers. It was really easy to just put yourself out there and perform at whatever skill level you were at. I remember being put on shows with these touring bands that were just so incredible and so beyond anything I thought I could do. And I was like, ‘How did I get this show?’ That kind of openness of opportunity (at Flint Local 432) really I think sparked a lot of creativity throughout the whole scene.”
The Headless band members are familiar faces in Flint's music scene, but their latest musical venture is new. They're excited that their first performance tonight will be at a familiar place on the Flint Local 432 stage, where they've been performing since they were teenagers.

"If I’m living, let’s say, in Oakland County, it’s gonna take me 30 minutes to go this way or 30 minutes to go that way. We wanna make sure we have not only world-class entertainment (in Flint), but also try to educate people on how parking’s gonna be much easier. The food and restaurants are vibrant, and it’s a great city.”

A.I. use, or overuse, is everywhere: businesses, nonprofit organizations, media, government. What's resulting is a bunch of badly designed materials that do the exact opposite of what marketing and branding exists to do: make you stand out from the crowd.
Here's our case against A.I., a little background on why we don't use it at all for our publication, and why we hope that others relying on it reconsider.

"Community is such a huge part of what soccer is. It is arguably one of the largest worldwide communities there is. And that’s what we want people to feel. Sports fans or not, everyone of all ages can enjoy hanging out at the games, spending their summers together. I think we just really want people to see that part of it. And hopefully along the way, they grow to love the Bucks as much as we do.”

“I’m asking them to commit to one vegetable, herb, or plant, and then we’ll share them,” said Victoria Eaton, owner of Sweet Peaces in the Flint Farmers' Market. “I’m just trying to address the issues of potential food insecurity, and show that by cooperating people can meet those needs. I found that when I first started the idea, I was asking everybody to do a garden, and people don’t have time for that. That’s why I asked them to grow one thing (instead). It’s all person to person, I’m trying to create a means for people to connect without their phones a little bit.”

The city's social media posts featuring a new mascot have certainly generated conversation ... so I asked a few questions to get the lore -- where the idea came from, teaching kids about local government, why a fox was chosen, A.I. use, and where people can expect to see Flinny around town.
