One of our main priorities for this year's state budget was food security for families across the state, especially those affected by federal cuts to the SNAP program. From the FRESH Act to the Illinois Grocery Initiative, this budget ensures our family, friends, and neighbors have access to fresh food, without sacrificing other essentials.

While federal policies and global uncertainty continue to drive up costs, the General Assembly focused on what Illinois can control to make everyday life more affordable, strengthen our communities, and expand opportunities across our state. I am proud of what we accomplished, and I look forward to continuing this work for the people of Illinois.

Happy Pride Month!

Pride is a celebration of love, authenticity, community, and the countless contributions of LGBTQIA+ people. Pride Month is also an important reminder of the movement's roots in protest; it is a call to stand up against discrimination and demand dignity, safety, and equal rights for all. While we celebrate how far we've come, we must recognize that the LGBTQIA+ community continues to face countless attacks on their rights.

This month, I join in celebrating the joy, resilience, and strength of the LGBTQIA+ community and remain committed to advancing policies that protect equality, expand opportunity, and ensure every person can live openly and authentically.

Last night, after months of hard work and compromise, we came together and passed a fiscally responsible balanced budget that addresses the most pressing needs of Illinoisans, takes charge of what we can control, and puts people first.

We’re meeting this affordability crisis head on by moving Illinois forward in areas where Washington has chosen to retreat. With Medicaid in jeopardy, we’re investing in vital safety net hospitals. Following HR 1, more than 100,000 Illinoisans lost access to SNAP benefits, so this budget increases funding for school lunches and introduces a new food security program for people who lose those benefits.

Life shouldn’t feel so hard, and the people of Illinois have empowered us to make it easier. With this budget, we’ve chosen a compassionate, responsible, and practical approach to accomplishing that.
