Higherglyphics

Building up a painting on a heavy ground of raw Arroyo sand comes with a few technical challenges, mostly getting the paint to behave on such a rough texture. For “True Grit”, I mixed cold wax medium directly into the oil paint. It gives the pigment enough body and structural hold to bite into the sand and stay exactly where I want it.
