We as parents can foster independence by meeting a child’s needs for dependence… The western way of thinking was that we needed to push a child away in order to encourage their independence. That by forcing them to be “independent“, they would learn autonomy. This only creates a kind of fragile independence, where children cannot express their needs for intimacy or help because they no longer realize they have needs. An individual with this kind of fragile independence is known as having an avoidant attached personality type, someone who is so fearful of being hurt by others, that they deeply believe that they do not need others.

Instead, let’s meet our children where they are. They show us what they need: their needs for closeness, for attachment. Let’s believe our children. When we meet their needs for closeness deeply, this builds an extremely secure foundation upon which they can build a securely attached personality. And when we meet fear or resistance around meeting our child’s needs, let’s consider that this is perhaps our own inner child, who didn’t have their needs met, who feels threatened by the possibility that things could have been different. Let’s include our inner child in the love and support as we love toward a more whole and connected understanding of love.
