The Fortus Is One Of My Favorites. Flying Dirty Upside Down. Blue Angels
Chasing history through Western Iowa today. 🚂
This is the big one: Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014. Commissioned in 1941 to haul heavy war-effort freight over the mountains, this mechanical marvel is a hinged (articulated) 4-8-8-4 giant pushing 7,000 horsepower.
It was retired in 1961 after logging over a million miles, but UP restored it to celebrate the transcontinental railroad's legacy. Now it's out on its coast-to-coast tour, making the Iowa landscape look like a vintage postcard. Absolutely unforgettable to see and hear it in person.
