“Habituating to the suck”

As day turned to night and the carnage grew, I began to wonder more of why people do these races. Runner after runner coming into the final aid station at painted rocks, with the lights on and no one home.

Hormozi talks about how we habituate to the good, his example being buying a new car. You buy the car and within a month it just becomes your car, it no longer has the allure of a once shiny object. He also says we can habituate to the suck (references how torture works). You find out a (for lack of a better term) “new way to get kicked in the nuts”.

I think some part of these long distance races is chasing that new feeling of exploring the unknown of the suck. The understanding that we have more to give and more to uncover in ourselves.

The story doesn’t end there, as Alex goes on to talk about a similar rendition of the parable of the Mexican fisherman. He has an employee who is a trainer who was doing an exceptional job. Just like any normal career path, he promoted that trainer to manager. A few months later he came back to Alex to ask to be demoted. To which Alex responded, “Your pay will get cut in half!” And the employee said, “I’ll just be poor then.” Alex then responded “I respect it, but I will never understand it.”

I think we often lose sight of content within a progress filled dopamine chasing world. I know I’m a victim to this mindset as well, constantly trying to pursue bigger races, latest trends, newest information, etc.

So I’ll end with a quote I love that I believe I heard on .

“You’ve already achieved goals that you said would make you happy.”
