This week, Meta removed facial recognition code from its Meta AI companion app after reporting by WIRED revealed that the company had already embedded substantial portions of an unreleased facial recognition system into software downloaded by more than 50 million users.
The feature, known internally as “NameTag,” was designed to identify people captured by Meta’s smart glasses and compare their biometric signatures against databases stored on users’ devices.
