It's national alligator day! The american alligator is the largest reptile in North America, reaching up to 15 feet in length and weighing close to 1,000 pounds. In the mid 1900s the American alligator was almost hunted to extinction, but they have since regained a stable population. Despite being a top predator, alligators are one of the few reptiles that have a maternal instinct to care for their young. These animals are often misunderstood, and if they are given the respect and space they deserve they pose little to no risk to humans.
