Last Sunday was a very special day for me. I was among several Texas Society of Sculptors members who had the opportunity to show our work at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden for Austin Museum Day. What made it so special was the interaction I had with the visitors (which I later learned topped over 800).
Among other works, I was showing two pieces called "Resilience" and "Empathy". As the visitors dropped by, I explained to them that I have a goal of creating additional sculptures to go with "Resilience" and "Empathy" to make a series of works representing qualities we'd like to see more of in the world today. I had a poster board and markers on my table, and asked them if they would like to write down a quality they think we could use more of.
The response was amazing! Some immediately wrote a word, while others really pondered the question, or even came back later after they had walked around a bit. Children, parents, grandparents, couples, teenagers - from different homelands, cultures, religions- all had ideas for me. One teen teased me that I was just crowdsourcing for ideas and I readily admitted that! I won't be able to use ALL their words. But I am grateful for them all. The conversations that were generated between all of us made the day so worthwhile. THANK YOU to all who stopped to participate.
