You think you have link budget problems? The New Horizons spacecraft sent pictures of Ultima Thule back to earth at 600 bps at 8.5 GHz with a 12W transmitter on a 2.1m dish over a path of 6,500,000,000 km. That's over 100 dB more path loss than from a geostationary satellite!
