Root flare depth matters.
These post oaks were recently uncovered after we discovered their root flares had been buried nearly 3 feet deep over a period of many years. When the natural flare of a tree is covered by excess soil, mulch, construction debris, or grade changes, the trunk tissue can stay too wet, oxygen can be reduced, and decay can develop where we need strength the most.
After carefully excavating the root flares, our team used resistance drilling to evaluate internal wood condition and check for decay. That information helps us determine whether the trees are still structurally viable and what care plan is appropriate moving forward.
Post oaks are tough Texas natives, but they do not tolerate root disturbance or buried trunk tissue well. Finding and correcting these issues early can make a major difference.

Spring is when your trees set the tone for the entire year 🌳—and surprisingly, your irrigation system plays a bigger role than most people realize.
In this photo, we see water running during freezing conditions earlier this week, creating ice buildup on branches. While it may look beautiful, this kind of timing can add unnecessary stress to trees when they’re just coming out of dormancy.
As temperatures fluctuate in North Texas, it’s critical to:
💧 Adjust irrigation timers for changing weather
💧 Avoid watering during freezing conditions
💧 Make sure watering supports root health—not added stress
Spring is a pivotal window. The right care now helps trees leaf out strong, resist pests, and handle summer heat. The wrong conditions? They can quietly set trees back for months.
We regularly consult with clients on watering practices as part of overall tree health. Small adjustments can make a big difference in how your trees perform throughout the year.
If you’re unsure whether your watering schedule is helping or hurting your trees, we’re here to help. Visit our website or give us a call to schedule a certified arborist consultation—we’d love to take a look.
