Dog training isn’t linear, and it’s not a cookie cutter approach. At least for us. Yes, there are basics that all dogs can or should learn but how you get there will not look the same with every dog.
We use all sorts of different approaches, tools, food, no food, toys, space, time, a playful approach, a calm and patient approach. It all depends on the dog in front of you, how they learn, what motivates them, what makes them feel good, safe and secure. Sometimes it takes a lot of consistency for it to click. Sometimes it clicks right away. And sometimes, we work in one approach and it works for a little while but then it doesn’t anymore and we pivot. We want to be open to that as well. It is all a journey. The best for us is to stay open minded, be creative and work with whatever the dog is giving you in any given moment.

Raising and living with a dog is one of the most beautiful and rewarding experiences one can have in life. And, it can also be a lot of work. What is one piece of valuable advice you could pass on to others who might be on that same journey or just starting out on theirs? 🤍

Working with your dog when you’re not really up for it will not get you or your dog anywhere. You will get frustrated easily, and it will show up in your interaction with your dog. It’s better to take a pause and do something else to take your mind off of it, and then start working with your dog.
If you feel yourself getting frustrated while working with your dog because you feel like you’re hitting a wall, pause, notice, end on a positive note, and either stop working your dog or do something fun that both of you enjoy. Just make sure you always end on a good note. Your frustration is not your dog’s fault. That’s your own stuff to deal with. Your dog doesn’t cause your frustration, it’s your responsibility how you respond to things.

We’re rooting hard for this good boy.
Chevy is one of those once-in-a-lifetime dogs, and we honestly can’t believe he hasn’t been adopted yet.
We trained Chevy for two weeks a few months ago and were blown away by how sweet, smart, and easygoing he is. I got to see him again this week during a photo shoot with and the , and man—he’s still just as handsome and well-mannered as ever. ⚾🐶
Here’s the rundown on Chevy:
✔️ 8-year-old German Shepherd
✔️ Good with dogs & people
✔️ House & crate trained
✔️ Great on leash and loves adventure
✔️ Low-key but still loves to play
✔️ Submissive, sweet, and belly-rub obsessed
✔️ Passed every temperament test with flying colors (no notes!)
✔️ Truly a “unicorn” dog
Chevy was almost euthanized for space after being left behind at the shelter. saved him just in time—and now we’re all waiting for that one special person or family to do the same. He’s so ready to bring joy to someone’s life.
If you’ve been looking for a good boy who’s already been trained, vetted, and approved by both rescue pros and trainers—Chevy’s your guy. 🐕💙
