What Certifications Do Independent Adjusting Firms Look For?
Many adjusters assume that once they're licensed, they're ready to work claims. But staffing departments often prioritize adjusters who already have specific certifications, estimating software training, and carrier approvals.
We contacted an IA firm directly to find out what they're actively seeking heading into the 2026 wind and hail season (March 1–September 1). Here's what they shared:
Restoration & Damage Assessment
IICRC – Water, fire, smoke, mold, and restoration knowledge
HAAG Training – Roof inspections and storm damage identification
Rope & Harness Safety – Safe roof access and fall protection
State & Program-Specific
CEA Certification – California earthquake claims
Louisiana Citizens Certification – State-backed insurance program
Mississippi Windstorm (MWUA) – Coastal MS coverage
TWIA Certification – Texas coastal wind and hail claims
Flood
NFIP/FEMA FCN Card – Required to handle any federal flood claims. Without it, you're locked out of flood work in LA, TX, FL, and beyond.
Estimating Software
Xactimate – The industry standard for property claims
Symbility/CoreLogic – Used by some carriers instead of Xactimate
CCC ONE – Essential for auto physical damage claims
Carrier-Specific
State Farm – Estimatics, Policy, and Auto certifications
NICTA – Required by carriers like Nationwide for fraud investigation training
Bonus Certifications That Expand Opportunities
FAA Part 107 – Drone inspections for roofs and hard-to-access structures
Spanish Language Certification – High value in many key markets
Adjusters with these certifications are often the first ones called when claims volume spikes. If you're looking to get on more IA firm rosters, start by identifying which of these you're missing, then close the gap before storm season hits.
