The program is called My Smart Hands(tm), and the curriculum was designed by a mom, Laura Berg, in Canada who has a background in ASL (American Sign Language). The website is www.mysmarthands.com and if you go on there, you'll see a link to a YouTube video of Laura's daughter Fireese signing as a baby - It's quite the picture!! These classes are not for just for children with hearing differences, but for all children, so if you know anyone expecting, with a new baby, or have one yourself, please consider contacting me or passing on my information. As we've all heard, children who learn signs to communicate their needs and wants, can do so earlier than they are able to speak, thus giving them a head start in communication and reducing frustration and tantrums.
The recommended age to start is 6 months of age, but it is never too late - the curriculum can be tailored to any age group! There are no age (or previous sign language knowledge) requirements for these classes and they run in 4- or 8-week increments. Subject matter will include everyday words, family, food, animals, emotions, opposites, bedtime, play signs and many more! Classes are 45 minutes and take place in a playful, educational and language-rich environment where caregivers and children will build their American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary through instruction, interactive games and songs.
I will offer discounts to anyone who organizes/hosts a group of 6-8 child/caregiver pairs together for a class.
