Is it Possible to Develop a Good Accent in a New Language You Learn as an Adult?

Yes, it is possible; however, you should know that there is a 99% probability that you will have an accent. There are a few known cases when adults applying very special efforts attained the accent of native speakers. For example, Chris Lonsdale in his book “The Third Ear” described that he had won a few bets stating that his Mandarin accent is native. I would like to warn that this ability to acquire a nearly native accent is as unique as the ability of some people to become polyglots. Keep in mind that the number of real polyglots with 20 or more active languages is much less than the number of Nobel Prize winners!

You should have realistic expectations and know how to achieve them. Do you know that your accent in the native language is a subconscious process and you have very little control over your own accent? Moreover, if you have acquired a word or two in your native language with the wrong accent, you will continue using these words incorrectly because it is a subconscious process.

Then, why do most adults try to learn pronunciation (the main component of accent) when learning a foreign language consciously? An even worse solution is offered by applications that ask you to compare your own pronunciation with a recording or speeches produced by a computer, and then ask you to imitate it.

The learner will have a much better accent if he or she will work on it in the following way: read the text, listen to the recording made by a native speaker in earphones and speak simultaneously. Earphones are needed to hear phonemes more clearly while NOT listening or analyzing your own pronunciation. The learner first imitates, and then produces foreign language collocations automatically. The student then acquires the accent subconsciously by using their brain propensity to find patterns in repeated actions and then produce collocations in a new language effortlessly without conscious control.
