May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and one of the most
underrated mental health skills is learning how to say the
truth about how youβre feeling *without* blaming someone
else. π
Many of us were never taught how to name what we feel, and
as a result, we also donβt know how to communicate how we
feel to others.
In therapy rooms, in recovery programs, in shelters, in
boardrooms and break rooms and one-on-ones that almost
happened β people are holding so much. And when they
finally try to say something, it often comes out sideways. Or it
doesn't come out at all. And then they carry the consequence
of that, on top of everything else. π₯
I statements are one of the most practical communication
tools in the mental health toolkit β not because they're
magic, but because they change who owns the experience,
and helps avoid triggering defensiveness. & once you stop
pointing and start describing, people listen. And talking about
it gets soooo much easier. ππ½
