Aside from being one of my favorite authors in my 20s, Bebe Moore Campbell was a tireless mental health advocate prior to her death in 2006. Bebe had a close relationship to the stigma and lack of sufficient access African Americans face when seeking care for mental health issues. As a result she helped to found the NAMI chapter in urban Los Angeles.
She wrote about the struggle to remove the stigma and barriers to efficient and effective care as a result of dealing with her daughter's mental health battle. Bebe's daughter is Maia Campbell, she was an actress in the 90s.
