I’ve been covering the opioid epidemic since 2019, while I was a reporter in Vermont (which has seen some of the highest overdose rates in the US). But this is the first time I’ve documented in real time how investigators are working through the discovery that a new “designer drug” might be responsible for recent mysterious deaths in the community.

The home health care worker's sexual assault complaint is the latest in a story that began this summer, when the South Carolina trooper was injured in a crash during a traffic stop. He has sued the local sheriff's department, saying a deputy was partly responsible for the wreck.
