Today, we recognize Flag Day and the history behind one of our nation’s most meaningful symbols.

As America grew, the flag changed with it. The Continental Congress adopted the first American flag in 1777, with 13 stars and 13 stripes representing the original colonies. Over time, it became the 50-star, 13-stripe flag we know today.

The American flag was officially changed 26 times to reflect the growth of the nation. Some early designs arranged the stars in a circle, while the flag used from 1795 to 1818 included 15 stars and 15 stripes. That was the flag flying over Fort McHenry in 1814, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write the poem that later became our national anthem.

The flag represents more than red, white, and blue. It stands for sacrifice, unity, freedom, and the generations of people who have helped shape our country.
