Before the Browns had the Dawgs...

Before the AFC Championship teams of the late 1980s...

They had Chip Banks.

The Browns selected Banks with the 3rd overall pick in the 1982 NFL Draft, and he immediately transformed the defense. In just his rookie season, he earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors and a trip to the Pro Bowl.

Fast.

Physical.

Explosive.

At 6-foot-4, Banks had the size to take on blockers and the athleticism to chase down anyone on the field.

Over his five seasons in Cleveland, he was selected to four Pro Bowls and earned First-Team All-Pro honors in 1983.

When Browns fans talk about the great defenses of the 1980s, names like Dixon, Minnifield, Matthews, and Golic are remembered for good reason.

But Chip Banks was one of the stars who helped set the standard.

He was a key piece of the 1986 Browns team that reached the AFC Championship Game and helped lay the foundation for one of the most memorable eras in franchise history.

The stats tell part of the story:

46 career sacks.
4 Pro Bowls.
1 All-Pro selection.
NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.

But Browns fans remember something more important.

No. 56 was a difference-maker.

One of the most dominant linebackers ever to wear brown and orange.
