What’s Your Blues Name?

The old phonograph crackled as if spitting out sand from the Mississippi Delta. Blind Amos leaned over the table. His milky eyes, though blind to the light, seemed to pierce right through the boy.

"You want 'em to call you like a musician?" Amos rasped, rapping a withered finger against the tabletop. "Leave your real name for the tax man. Down here, you gotta know what hurts."

The boy felt his shirt sticking to his back. In the stifling backroom of the Blue Note club, the scent of cheap gin mingled with the aroma of aged wood. His entire existence at tonight’s jam session hung in the balance. Without a name, he was a nobody. Just another kid with a clean guitar.

"I don't know... maybe just 'Jack'?" he managed to choke out.

Amos laughed, a sound like sandpaper rubbing against metal. "Jack? The deck is full of Jacks, and every last one of 'em ends up in the mud. Listen close. Your blues name is the sum of your sins and your bad luck. Take somethin' you lost, add a physical flaw you’re tryin' to hide, and season it with the name of the place you ran away from."

The boy closed his eyes. He thought of the lame dog he’d left behind in Memphis and the hunger that twisted his gut every rainy Tuesday night. He felt the cold weight of the steel slide in his pocket.

"Limping Tuesday Memphis," he whispered, the words tasting like dust and smoke.

Amos stopped drumming his fingers. A sudden, heavy silence filled the room. The old man smiled, revealing the remains of yellowed teeth. "Good. Now get out there and prove that name belongs to you. Or die tryin'."

We see a lot of bad stuff happening in the world but there is a lot of good going on! Come to this luncheon event to meet the Non-Profits in our area and see what they are doing! I'll be there!
