At midnight on Friday, a sweeping bipartisan housing bill is poised to become law, even though Trump refuses to sign it. The bill cleared Congress with overwhelming bipartisan support and aims to ease America’s housing affordability crisis. Trump can still issue a veto before the deadline.
The bill, named the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, was sent to the White House on June 29 after passing both the Senate and the House. Trump is refusing to sign the bill unless Congress passes his SAVE America Act, which would require proof of U.S. citizenship and photo identification to vote in federal elections. Democrats and some Republicans have balked at the measure.
In a Truth Social post on Friday, Trump wrote about the housing bill: “I will not sign the Housing Bill, which has been fully approved by Congress and sent to the White House, in PROTEST over the fact that the United States Senate is not capable of passing THE SAVE AMERICA ACT.”
The ROAD to Housing Act is the first major legislative effort to address the nation’s housing crisis in more than three decades. The bill seeks to reduce federal regulatory barriers to housing construction, encourage local governments to reform restrictive zoning policies, expand incentives for new development, and modernize building standards—all of which could help pave the way for more affordable housing.
Trump’s refusal to sign the bill is largely symbolic. His stance reflects the growing rift between his administration and Senate Republicans.
