How the C-suite sees us: "Anesthesiology has become a strategic business issue." That's the blunt assessment from a new Surgical Directions white paper making the rounds this week (via Yahoo Finance). Hospitals are paying more for anesthesia coverage while getting less stability, less predictability, and less control — driven by workforce shortages, ballooning locum costs, rising subsidy requests, and clinicians who increasingly (and reasonably) prioritize schedule flexibility and work-life balance.
If hospital executives are finally treating anesthesiology as a strategic priority, we need to understand how they're thinking — because it shapes your compensation, your call schedule, and your patients' access to care.
