SkinPick had the privilege of attending the very first in Chicago — a truly special moment for the BFRB community.

Researchers, clinicians, authors, advocates, parents, and individuals with lived experience came together to learn, share, and connect around topics including science, treatment, advocacy, and support.

But beyond the presentations and information, something deeper happened. There is something incredibly powerful about people with shared experiences coming together in one space. Conversations that reduce shame. Stories that help people feel seen. Moments that remind individuals they are not alone.

Representing the SkinPick programme and participating in several sessions, it was an honour to witness the impact this weekend had on so many people. For some, it was the first time they had ever spoken openly about their picking. For others, it was the first time they truly felt understood.

Experiences like this highlight the importance of community in BFRB recovery and awareness. We left feeling inspired, grateful, and even more connected to this community than before.

It is already deeply missed, and we’re looking forward to the next one.

Attending the first dedicated skin picking conference felt incredibly meaningful for us at SkinPick.

For so many people, skin picking is still misunderstood, hidden, or something they’ve carried alone for years. Being present in a space filled with individuals, clinicians, researchers, advocates, and community members reminded us why visibility and access to support matter so much.

We attended not only to listen and learn, but also to help raise awareness that treatment, resources, and support do exist. Many people still don’t realise that skin picking is recognised, understood, and treatable.

Showing up for this community matters.
Helping people feel seen matters.
And continuing to build accessible, compassionate support matters too.

Thank you
and for creating this opportunity for all of us to gather as a community!

Being close to someone can feel like more than just connection.
It can feel like being seen in a way that’s hard to control.

Not just who you are
but parts of yourself you wish you could hide.

The skin that’s healing.
The marks you notice before anyone else does.
The small adjustments you make without thinking.

It’s not about not wanting closeness.
It’s about how vulnerable it can feel to be fully seen.

If this resonates, you’re not alone in it.
There’s nothing wrong with you for finding this hard.
