The House She Built
Construction sites are usually loud, fast-moving places where plans change daily and problems have to be solved on the fly.
But one project led by Emily Mackie of Inspired Interiors stood out in a completely different way.
From QR codes posted throughout the job site so contractors could instantly access drawings and installation specs, to design decisions that prioritized how a family would actually live in the space, the entire project was approached with a level of intention rarely seen in residential construction.
The project eventually became part of the Art of Living Show House vision in Wilmette, a concept designed to bring together designers, artisans, and builders to showcase innovation in residential design.
What truly set this project apart, though, was Emily’s background in interior design and whole-home optimization. Most builders think in terms of structure: walls, rooms, square footage. Emily thought about how a family would actually live in the home.
Like many bold ideas, the project faced challenges and public debate. But the experience left a lasting impression on everyone involved. Because sometimes a project becomes more than a house. It becomes a story about leadership, resilience, and the impact of women in construction.
