On this day (April 25th) in 1944, the United Negro College Fund was incorporated in New York with 27 charter members. Attending one of UNCF's first meetings are ( l. to r.) John D. Rockefeller, Jr.; UNCF founder, Frederick Douglass Patterson; and Walter Hoving, President of Lord & Taylor and UNCF's first national campaign director. During UNCF’s first annual campaign in 1944, the 27 charter members raised $765,000, more than three times the amount that they had all raised combined in the previous year. UNCF
