Social media and the related pressures to present oneself with filters can also drive internalized sexism for women, as there can often be the creation of an ideal image that is not only not attainable, but harmful to how girls and women come to think about the value of their bodies in a digital age. This internalization of negative beliefs is called internalized sexism, which is a manifestation of male privilege.

Objectification theory asserts that within the system of patriarchy, women experience being treated as “objects” who can be minimized, dehumanized, and therefore experience violence in many forms. This objectification can drive mental health inequities for women, such as depression, anxiety, and disordered eating.
