One thing I’ve learned after years behind a camera is that art can show up almost anywhere if we slow down enough to notice it.

Even in the middle of an assignment, I’m still looking for light, gesture, texture, and moments that feel human and timeless.

Sometimes the quieter moments say the most.

There’s a difference between taking a photograph… and seeing a life.

The work of Dorothea Lange has always reminded me of that.

She didn’t just document people. She honored them. Even in hardship, even in uncertainty, there was dignity in the way she saw the world.

Her work has been one of my greatest inspirations in the way I try to approach my own. Seeking not just an image, but something deeper, something felt.

This image is a powerful example of that kind of seeing.

There are a few places that still honor the spirit of the West the right way. Quietly, honestly, without pretense.

I’m grateful to share that I will soon have a small collection of my work on display at The Cowboy Emporium here in Cheyenne.

This initial offering will include three limited edition pieces from my legacy work. Each one captured in black and white on archival paper, and presented as it was meant to be seen.

These are not just images, but reflections of a life lived close to the land… to time, to weather, and to the enduring character of the West.

I’ll be sharing more in the coming days as these pieces make their way into the gallery.

📸 The More You Know: Off-Camera Flash

Today, many photographers lean heavily on natural light and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Natural light can be beautiful.

But understanding and using off-camera flash gives a photographer something different:
control. Control over light, direction, mood, and ultimately, the final image.

Interestingly, off-camera lighting isn’t new at all.

In the mid to late 1800s, photographers were already using flash powder, and it was by nature off camera. The idea of attaching a flash directly to a camera didn’t really take shape until the invention of the hot shoe in the 1930s, and even then, it didn’t become widely common until much later.

In many ways, photography began with off-camera light.

What’s changed isn’t the concept it’s the technology. Today, we have the ability to shape and refine light with incredible precision, allowing us to create images that are not only technically strong, but artistically intentional.

So while natural light will always have its place, off-camera lighting remains one of the most powerful tools a photographer can use.

And now you know.

There is a difference between capturing an image… and creating one.

While my commercial work through Davissa is centered on serving clients and telling their stories, this space is something entirely different.

This is where the work becomes personal.

Every image shared here is intentional crafted, not captured. These are not moments found, but moments shaped. Built with purpose, guided by feeling, and rooted in a deeper sense of meaning.

This is my work as a photographic artist.

Not volume. Not trends. Not noise.

Just a quiet, deliberate pursuit of something that lasts.
