I assumed my first formal, full-time leadership role at the age of 24.
Ever since I was 21 years old, I have worked and gone to school...
So, when people ask me how I have accelerated my nursing and leadership career, one of my responses is, “Education plus experience.”
Usually, pursuing education without experience results in an deficit where one is qualified in regards to education, but not experience... This often means that the positions offered is more entry-level and pays less.
When gaining experience without the education, usually we reach a plateau where we have adequate experience, but we can’t advance because of a lack of education.
So, always advise clients to pursue both because it helps us compress time and be best positioned for what’s next!
What’s been your journey? Have you pursued education and experience together, or have you advanced in one area and then the other? Do you use a different strategy?

I’ve been a hiring manager for many years. Then, I became a corporate executive with a publicly traded company.
There are “levels” to all of us... and “levels” to our goals. I didn’t grow up with people showing me how to invest in myself professionally and how I could compress my time to goal by leveraging the experiences of others who have walked the way and can show the way. When I learned and leveraged this, the game changed for me. Now... I am the change I want to see. Often, with a few adjustments, we can get to or exceed our goals on a shorter timeline.
