Here is a brief tour of a wool scouring plant. Scouring is the process of cleaning “greasy” wool, which is that state it is in when shorn off the sheep. Only about half of the weight of greasy wool is actually fiber, the rest being lanolin (oil naturally produced by the sheep), dirt, vegetable matter and other contaminants, which all need to be removed. Once scoured, wool can be made into any number of products, from high-end suits to the cores of baseballs. Whether you realize it or not, products form the sheep industry are probably a part of your every day life.
