Hearing loss is stigmatized because no one talks about it. 🦻👀

When we treat it like something to be hidden, people might feel a need to hide.

When we start to confidently open up about the technology we use, that confidence can be contagious. It might allow someone else to feel comfortable opening up about their hearing loss.

Once we start sharing ideas, we learn that others have the same struggles and thoughts we do. We we share our tips, tricks and tools, we suddenly have a place to embrace the technology that is available.

Like using spell check or a calculator, CaptionMate helps with clarity for your phone calls.

CaptionMate captions your calls in real-time and is FREE to anyone in the US with a hearing loss.

Download it today to give it a try!

Do these fears about using the phone resonate? đź‘€

Many people with hearing loss avoid using the phone. There’s an unexplainable anxiety that comes with taking the chance on the phone.

đź”· I miss THE ONE important word.
Have you ever heard the whole joke but missed the punchline? Needing to ask someone to repeat a key word three times can lead to frustration for both parties and does not solve the communication issues. Many times, I’ll overlook the word.

đź”· Context changes
If my purpose for the call is to make an appointment, I expect the words to match the words related to the appointment. Sometimes, people throw in conversational words about their weekend, and I’m not expecting those words, which leads to confusion.

đź”· Self-advocacy fatigue
Disclosing your hearing loss can be draining. Not everyone understands what you need, or they’ll start speaking very slowly which makes it harder to understand

đź”· The unknowns
There are certain sounds my hearing levels can’t access. When I use the phone, I take a chance on the unknowns, which can include accents, voice pitch, mumbling, background noise, reception/connection, headset quality, voice-activated systems, and more.

đź”· Listening Fatigue
Focusing on the call alone and figuring out all of the above is draining. It can make me really tired to complete the rest of my day’s tasks. Sometimes, many calls need to be made in a day.

CaptionMate can help
CaptionMate captions your calls in real time. Bringing:

đź”· Confidence
đź”· Context
đź”· Clarity
đź”· Backup
đź”· Transcripts
đź”· Privacy

It’s not that we can’t hear the person on the other end, but we have trouble making out the words.

With certain letter sounds lost in speech, a lot words sound similar and blend together.

What do you love about your hearing loss? đź‘€

It’s Disability Pride Month, and we wanted to look on the brighter side of hearing loss. So often, in a hearing-centric world, hearing loss is seen as a stigma. However, there are things that we also love about our hearing loss.

A few weeks ago, we asked our users what they love about their hearing loss and we wanted to share some of the responses we got.

đź”· It makes me more aware of body language and visual cues.

đź”· I can choose to take my hearing aids out for a rest and enjoy the silence.

🔷 I get a kick out of saying things like “I’m beeping” or “My ear just died” and seeing the expressions on others’ faces.

đź”· I can sleep through the night in quiet.

đź”· I love my hearing loss community that just gets me.

đź”· Losing my hearing has made me more kind and empathetic. I used to take things for granted, for which I now recognize the nuances.

There are so many different ways we can love our hearing loss.

This makes our community unique because it shares thoughts and ideas that allow us to see things from a different perspective.

We love that we get to provide accessibility through CaptionMate, an app that captions phone calls in real-time.

It’s free for anyone in the U.S. with a hearing loss. Try it today!

Did you know that you can use CaptionMate on your desktop? đź‘€

This is part of our multi-casting feature. Our app is available on mobile phones, tablets and through the browser on your desktop.

Here are some of our users’ favorite ways to use CaptionMate on their desktops:

đź”· With and next to a Zoom meeting
You can dial in with CaptionMate and see the words right next to your conversation on the screen.

🔷 For work calls where it’s right in front of them
When we’re at work, it’s nice to be able to keep the conversation on the screen instead of holding a phone separately.

đź”· Having it on screen helps with note-taking
Because there’s no separate device, you can easily see and take the necessary notes.

đź”· Full context in front of you helps with front loading.
Front loading is when you have the context and information in front of you so that you don’t have to work so hard to understand all the vocal information.

đź”· Saved transcript helps with immediate follow-ups.
When you want to send a follow-up email immediately after your meeting. Saved transcripts provide easy access.

We talk a lot about using CaptionMate in day-to-day scenarios, and it also provides a huge advantage in the workplace where we’re sometimes at our computers all day.

CaptionMate captions your phone calls in real-time.
