Those piles of brown “sticks” and sometimes seaweed that can be seen at or above the high tide line is known as “wrack”. Wrack is made up mostly of a marsh grass that once dead is carried by the tide to the ocean shoreline, where it provides food sources and resting areas for shorebirds and serves to catch windblown sand to build dunes.
