Many people know the Esquire Hotel as one of Gastonia’s premier destinations, but few know the history behind it.
Built in 1918 as the First National Bank of Gastonia, the building later became known as the Lawyers Building, housing attorneys and legal offices for decades. After sitting vacant for many years, it was beautifully restored and reopened as the Esquire Hotel in 2020.
A great deal of credit goes to Nathan Kirby, whose vision and investment helped bring this historic landmark back to life. The restoration of the Esquire was more than a hotel project—it became a catalyst for the continued revitalization of downtown Gastonia, proving that investing in our history can help shape our future.
Today, the Esquire stands as a symbol of what’s possible when people believe in our city and are willing to invest in it.
On June 25th, we’ll gather on the ROOFTOP of this historic landmark for The Art of Poetry a night of creativity, culture, and community in one of Gastonia’s most iconic buildings.
