Spotted Dog Timber Frames

We make old things new, this 1910s massive timber frame barn will soon be making it’s way from Va to Nc for a new lease on life as a pottery studio. It will be a place to learn about and preserve the almost extinct Catawba Valley Pottery.

As you all know from past posts we don’t just do new construction. We are well versed in historical restoration as well and use traditional materials and techniques to restore old buildings and bring them back to life. This house was built in 1840 and has some monster granite stones in the chimney that were covered by plaster for over 180 years. Homeowner had already removed the plaster and wanted the chimney stones cleaned and pointed. We came in with traditional lime putty mortar made by our friends at Lancaster Lime Works out of lancaster PA and repointed the whole chimney and fire box. Since the masonry work was going to be plastered over the original builders did not care how the stonework looked so as you can see there was a bit of everything in there from big granite to broken brick and even two river rocks. This is going to be a cool focal point for years to come, and hopefully the backdrop to many dinners with laughter in good company. We have a few things left to do so we will be cleaning the stone one more time and I will get some photos of it all cleaned up in its final form soon.
